Patrick was a 15 year-old son of a Romanised Briton called Calpornius who was a Landowner employing many manservants and maid servants.
St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland. He is the person God sent to bring Christianity to Ireland. His name is associated with many places of historical and ecclesiastical interest in several parts of the country.
Patrick was seized and taken to the West of Ireland where he had an isolated and lonely existence. Yet Patrick knew his God! He confessed, "I am a sinner, most unlearned, the least of all faithful and utterly despised by man."Patrick pleads that it was the Lord who lifted him up. " I was like a stone lying in the deep mire, and He that is mighty came in His mercy and lifted me up, and raised me aloft, and placed me on top of the wall." Patrick describes his conversion thus: "The Lord opened the understanding of my unbelieving heart that I might recall my sins and turn with all my heart to the Lord my God."
Patrick eventually escaped from slavery and lived in Britain, but God called him back to Ireland and Patrick bravely returned there to preach the Gospel. Patrick established his first Church at Saul near Strangford Lough.
Patrick is reckoned to have died around 460AD and is said to be buried in the grounds of Down Cathredal in Downpatrick.
Patrick's greatest legacy? It was his preaching of Christ crucified, buried, risen and coming again and the importance of a personal relationship with Him!
